Oak Grove Historical Society

Meeting Minutes
November 21, 2009

The November 21, 2009 meeting of Oak Grove Historical Society met at 10:30 am. at the Davis Center in Oak Grove.

Vice-President Pat Lewis called the meeting to order. The October meeting had a great speaker. There was no business meeting. The notes from the meeting were read. CeCe Morgan made a motion they be accepted and Bryan Hord seconded the motion. The notes were approved.

Treasurer CeCe Morgan, reported a total $12,178.45 as a balance in the checking account. She stated that the auction brought in $3,549.00. There are a few expenses for advertising that need to be paid from this amount. The post office box rental is also due.

Karen Findley asked that we begin thinking about the 2010 ornament. She thought a white ornament with a silhouette of the Old Mill would be an idea. Bryan Hord suggested that the picture from a horse show that is on a postcard might be a possibility as well. It was obtained by his sister on eBay showing nearly 200 horses.

Discussion followed regarding the Christmas Open House to be held Saturday, December 19, 2009, at the Davis Center from 2-6 pm. Kelly Johnson has agreed to be Santa and he will be there from 2-4 for photos with the children. The city needed to be contacted to make certain the Santa suit hadn't been reserved by someone. Various members are to contact music groups or indivduals to perform at the Open House. Pat was going to contact the photographer. Refreshments would consist of cookies, brownies, etc.; punch, coffee, etc; and popcorn. Members will prepare the refreshments. Decorations from last year will be used and those decorating will need to be at the Davis Center at 8:00 am. A suggestion was made to have the Oak Grove Historical Society logo printed on napkins. Invitations will be sent to the local historical societies and the Jackson County Historical Society calendar.

Vice-President Pat Lewis brought before the group the problem with roof leakage in the Vestal Building on Holly's side. Greg Mclallen and Bryan Hord have attempted to implement a temporary solution, but the upcoming winter could cause major problems. Pat Lewis will attempt to obtain the structural engineering evaluation from the former owner of the building. Bryan Hord mentioned that Ron Hackley might look at it and make suggestions. It may be necessary to place steel beams to support the roof to prevent it from falling in and injuring someone. Pat Lewis had bids on repairing the roof and they ranged from $16,000 to $35,000. Karen Findley mentioned that we needed to find out how much liability we have covered on the building.

Joyce McCrander made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Kathleen Baer seconded the motion.
Meeting adjourned.
